Trainee Committee Appointments
HIS actively encourages the participation of Trainees within the Society and our Trainee membership has grown significantly in recent years. To reflect the value of Trainee participation, the HIS Trainee Committee is a new standing committee for the Society, responsible for overseeing Trainee membership sign-up and establishing regular communication and engagement with Trainee members throughout the country. See terms of reference.
We are delighted to announce the first appointments for Trainee Representatives which were ratified by Council on 5 December 2016.
James Price - Chair and Professional Affairs Representative
Dr James Price graduated in Medicine from St. George’s Hospital Medical School, London, in 2005. He undertook an Academic Foundation Programme in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology where he begun his research in healthcare-associated infection. Following on from this James was awarded a Walport NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship during which he successfully completed a PhD in collaboration with UKCRC Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM) consortium based at the University of Oxford. His work included an evaluation of the utility of whole-genome sequencing to inform on Staphylococcus aureus infection in a healthcare setting. James is currently an Infectious Diseases and Microbiology registrar in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery. In 2014 James was appointed as a NIHR Clinical Lecturer where he continues to develop his research in healthcare-associated S. aureus carriage and transmission.
“I have applied for the position of Professional Affairs Trainee representative because I have a passionate interest in healthcare-associated infection, both in clinical practice and research. I am keen to work with leading infection prevention specialists and trainees at HIS to develop ways to optimise and promote training in infection prevention, to develop opportunities to help nurture those interested in pursuing a career within this field and to gain valuable experience in developing my own skill set. “
Luke Bedford - Communications Representative
Dr Luke Bedford says
"As a final year microbiology trainee I am familiar with the challenges that trainees face as they progress, as well as the various training opportunities that are available. I look forward to engaging with trainees so that they are aware of the various events that the Healthcare Infection Society can offer towards training and passing examinations. I am keen to use modern communications media such as the web-based applications and social media to aid trainee education, as I believe these platforms have a lot of potential to help with infection trainees.
I have been involved in organising a number of training and educational initiatives in my local trust and in the East of England area, and am looking forward to using this experience in the challenges of working within a national organisation."
Jasmin Islam - Education Representative
As a junior doctor, I have witnessed the huge impact of healthcare associated infection and antimicrobial resistant infections on my patients. As a direct result, I undertook research into factors affecting patient susceptibility to Clostridum difficile infection during my PhD and more recently spent time working with NICE to develop novel antibiotic stewardship strategies at a national and international level.
As HIS Educational Trainee Rep, I’m looking forward to championing our speciality and ensuring that as trainees we are well equipped to work as clinical infection specialists in the future. To ensure this happens, I plan to work closely with the HIS committee and trainee members to create a relevant and dynamic educational programme. Additional aims include: generating research funding streams for trainees, developing scientific writing opportunities and encouraging trainees to share ideas about healthcare infection prevention quality improvement projects. Hopefully this will leave us all well prepared for our future careers in this exciting speciality!
