Call for Papers: Essential Papers for Infection Trainees and Junior Specialists
Submit your work to the new Infection Prevention in Practice (IPIP) Special Issue.
The journal aims to support trainees and junior practitioners by publishing a collection of summary articles, covering key Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) themes taken from competencies within the Royal College of Pathologists and Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training board Medical Microbiology curriculum (2021).

Infection Prevention in Practice (IPIP), the Gold Open Access journal of the Healthcare Infection Society, has announced a call for expressions of interest for a special article collection to be published this Spring. The collection aims to support trainees and junior practitioners by providing concise, exam-focused summaries of key infection prevention and control (IPC) topics.

The themed collection will be based on competencies from the 2021 Royal College of Pathologists and Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board Medical Microbiology curriculum and will be led by a group of trainee Guest Editors in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Proposed topics include PPE and HCID management, isolation and cohorting, disinfection and sterilisation, microbiological surveillance, outbreak investigation, ventilation, water safety, and the role of laboratories and prophylaxis in preventing healthcare-associated infections.

Authors are invited to submit a 250-word expression of interest outlining their proposed topic, scope, and relevant guidelines, with at least one trainee included in the authorship team. Submissions are due by 5pm on Friday, 6 February 2026.

Selected proposals will be invited to develop full articles of 1,000–1,500 words. Fee waivers will be awarded to the strongest submissions, and all articles will undergo standard peer review.
