Support, Communications & Data FAQs

What happens to my data when I become a member?

Your data is handled securely in accordance with HIS’s privacy policy and GDPR regulations.

What happens to my data if I allow my membership to lapse?

HIS will retain relevant personal information for as long as necessary for legitimate business, legal and regulatory purposes. Some information may need to be retained after membership ends, for example to meet financial record-keeping requirements. Where appropriate, HIS may also use your details to contact you about renewing or rejoining the Society, in accordance with your communication preferences and applicable data protection requirements.

How do I get help if I cannot access the Journal of Hospital Infection?

Eligible HIS members can access the Journal of Hospital Infection through their member benefits. Sign in to your HIS account and follow the relevant journal access link. If you are unable to access the journal, please contact journals@his.org.uk for assistance.

When will I start receiving member communications after joining?

Once your membership has been successfully processed, HIS will contact you using the email address associated with your membership. You may receive information about your membership, Society activities, events, publications and other relevant updates. Your communication preferences will determine which non-essential communications you receive.

How do I change my email address or other account details?

You can update your personal and contact details through your HIS member account portal, via the 'Personal details' tile on the dashboard. If you need assistance updating your details, please contact the HIS membership team.

What should I do if I am not receiving HIS emails/ online event links?

First, please check your spam or junk email folder and add HIS to your safe senders or contacts list. If you are still not receiving emails, check that the email address held on your membership record is correct and contact the HIS membership team for assistance.

Can I choose which communications I receive?

Yes. HIS maintains your communication preferences and you can opt out of non-essential communications at any time. For group emails, you can also use the unsubscribe link provided at the bottom of the email.

How do I unsubscribe from emails or communications?
  1. Use the unsubscribe link in emails you received
  2. Update your preferences in your HIS account. After logging into your HIS account, click the 'Personal details' tile , then click 'My preferences' followed by 'view/ edit preferences'. Tick the options you want and click 'Save preferences'.

Will I still receive essential membership communications if I opt out of marketing?

Yes. Opting out of marketing or other non-essential communications does not prevent HIS from contacting you where communication is necessary to administer your membership or provide a service you have requested (i.e. payment or renewal notifications).
